In the heart of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Meara Holubowich grew up surrounded by challenges that would have overwhelmed many. Yet, from a young age, she carried a determination that set her apart. Balancing schoolwork with the responsibility of helping her family make ends meet, Meara also devoted herself to her passion: traditional Ukrainian dance, performing at a semi-professional level while honoring her cultural roots.

Her perseverance, talent, and commitment to her community have now earned her a full-ride scholarship to the University of Victoria as a 2024 Beedie Luminaries Shine Scholar. At UVic, Meara is determined to turn her own experiences into action, advocating for food security and building support systems for young people who face the same hardships she once did.

Through it all, Meara has remained grounded in her culture, her community, and her dreams. “Meara carries her culture, her community, and her ambition—all with extraordinary grace,” say those who have watched her journey unfold. Her story is a powerful reminder that resilience, hard work, and heart can open doors—and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
